GERD, Part 3

So what is the best way to minimize GERD?  Starting with choosing foods that are low in caffeine, chocolate, citrus, fried tomatoes ,fried onions should provide initial relief.  Furthermore, cutting down on social alcohol intake may improve the symptoms even more.  Needless to say, abstaining from tobacco would be extremely beneficial.  Not eating for two hours before lying down would also help with improvement of symptoms.

If the symptoms of GERD persist after diet modification and exercise, few medications could help on as needed basis.  Further, in some patients there may be a need to undergo Endoscopic Gastroduodenoscopy (EGD) to ascertain a normal structure of the esophagus.  In many cases, there is also a need to evaluate the appropriate muscular movement of the esophagus and the muscular tone of the LES by performing esophageal manometry.
