Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy in NYC
What is capsule endoscopy?
A capsule endoscopy involves swallowing a video capsule that can take photographs of the inside of your stomach, esophagus, small intestine and other areas of your body. During the procedure, your doctor will use the small camera, which also has a built-in light source, to look for changes and abnormalities in your digestive system. The photographs taken are transmitted directly to a computer and reviewed by your doctor in order to diagnose and monitor treatment for certain digestive diseases. This process is totally safe and the capsule passes through your body naturally.
Which digestive diseases can a capsule endoscopy help diagnose?
Your doctor can diagnose many digestive problems, including the following:
- Crohn’s disease
- Small intestinal cancer
- Other tumors of the digestive tract

Are there any limitations with a capsule endoscopy?
The capsule endoscopy procedure is relatively safe, however, it does have some limitations. The capsule gives your doctor the best view of your digestive system, but if therapy or treatment is recommended based on findings during the test, your doctor may need to perform a second test to locate the exact portion of your digestive tract with the irregularity. Other potential limitations could include:
- Your doctor may miss an abnormality due to the speed at which the capsule travels through your system.
- The battery of the capsule could die during the test, limiting what your doctor can view.
- If any area of your intestines is too narrow, the capsule could become stuck.
